The "Semič in 20 images" Local collection

The SEMIČ IN TWENTY IMAGES history collection presents the most important events and persons to leave a mark on our town. It spans the period from the early stone age to the end of the 20th century. Interesting content attests to surprisingly varied historical events, the likes of which you would not expect to find in such a small rural settlement.

The earliest traces of population here can be found in Judovska hiša (the Jewish House), today one of the attractions of the karstic educational trail along the Krupa River. Remnants of high-quality ceramic earthenware stem from the late stone age, a time when pottery was highly developed on Krupsko polje.

Easy-to-read panels of a modern design lend an excellent overview of Semič’s development in the middle ages, when St Stephen's Church was the town’s principal building. A detailed and large depiction of the tabor walls around the church takes us back to the time of Ottoman raids. You will also learn many fascinating things about the early beginnings of winegrowing on Semiška gora in the distant past. You can see interesting coats of arms and descriptions of castles of former noble families of Semič and the surrounding area. The castle on the Krupa River was particularly grand.

The unveiling of the water supply system and the opening of the railway tunnel on Semiška gora just before World War I hold great significance in our town’s memory. The exhibition also sheds light on the diverse cultural and educational life, which thrived in Semič even though times were hard.

The collection also documents the severe trials of the first and second World Wars, which considerably impacted the townspeople of Semič.

We can still recognise many of the townspeople on the black and white photographs of life in the second half of the 20th century, while a special corner is dedicated to those Semič townspeople who particularly established themselves in various areas of public life. Perhaps you will recognise some of them too?
